Residency Host: Anghiari Dance Hub, Anghiari
Contact person: Gerarda Ventura: direzione@anghiaridancehub.eu

What kind of collaboration would you like to establish with the Norwegian partners?
It could be interesting to con4nue a residency program between under 35 choreographers and dancers from Italy and Norway.
What are the research areas the Italian facility is focusing on? What is its mission?
Anghiari Dance Hub has been described as a “connecting ring between training and production” or an “incubator.” It was created to provide in-depth tools for contemporary dance creation, especially for young choreographers.
Over the past two decades, Italy has developed initiatives such as showcases, platforms, and festivals to support emerging choreographers. However, gaps remain, particularly in training facilities that equip choreographers with the full range of skills needed for their work. Early rehearsals often reveal shortcomings in dramaturgy, composition, and the use of lighting, music, and silence. Limited resources also restrict experimentation with performers, resulting in mostly solo works. Anghiari Dance Hub addresses these challenges.
Each year, choreographers under 35, along with up to two performers, are invited to submit new projects. From 2015 to 2023, 103 participants have taken part, some including musicians and dramaturgs. Residencies have grown from intermittent to continuous periods of up to three months, interspersed with thematic seminars on topics like dance dramaturgy, composition, and collaboration with music and light, taught by Italian and international professionals.
At the end of the residency, choreographers present their work in two public performances at Teatro dei Ricomposti, followed by a discussion with critics, scholars, and practitioners. Participants receive grants for travel and subsistence, housing, rehearsal spaces, and support from Anghiari Dance Hub staff.
The Hub fosters a supportive community where diverse artists share their work, exchange feedback, and develop freely. It provides time, space, and professional guidance for choreographers to fully explore their creative potential.

What kind of collaboration would you like to establish with the Norwegian partners?
Collaborating with Norwegian partners represents a strategic opportunity to develop a truly bilateral residency model, grounded not only in artistic mobility but also in a structured dialogue between different cultural ecosystems. Working with foreign contexts and institutions allows artists to encounter new cultural geographies and benefit from diverse aesthetic, methodological, and pedagogical approaches. Beyond this already significant value, what we consider essential is building an authentic and sustained professional relationship with our Norwegian partners.
Our intention is to establish an open and continuous exchange on the role of research, experimentation, and the creative process in the performing arts—elements that form the core identity of L’arboreto as a Regional Residency Centre of Emilia-Romagna. We do not wish to limit the collaboration to a logistical exchange of spaces and services; rather, we aim to co-design interaction formats that highlight the intangible value of residencies: time, listening, the construction of shared imaginaries, and the relationship with a place and its community.
The experience carried out in September 2025 with the Norwegian company Mia Habib exemplifies the type of collaboration we strive to build. The company did not use L’arboreto merely as a rehearsal space, but as a cultural and landscape ecosystem with which to actively engage: the forest, the Teatro Dimora, the village, the local communities, and our curatorial team all became integral elements of the creative process. This immersive and reciprocal approach captures the essence of the partnership we seek to strengthen.
In this spirit, we would like to co-develop with the artists and Norwegian partners residency pathways that highlight:
The specificities of each place (the rural landscape, the architecture of Teatro Dimora, the natural environment of the Arboreto, and the local communities) as creative and methodological resources.
The expertise of curators and artistic advisors from both organizations, fostering mutual learning, sharing of tools, and the development of new sensitivities.
The participatory and relational dimension of residencies, creating opportunities for encounters with local communities and different audiences.
A long-term shared perspective, which in time could lead to an Italian–Norwegian platform for artistic research, with regular exchanges, cross-mentoring, and co-productions.
Our goal is not only to offer mobility opportunities to artists, but to build a lasting cultural relationship capable of generating knowledge, new practices, and a shared vision of the role of residencies in transforming territories and creative processes.
What are the research areas the Italian facility is focusing on? What is its mission?
Our research focus and mission are grounded in the identity of L’arboreto – Teatro Dimora as a Regional Residency Centre. What makes our facility distinctive is the combination of a unique natural setting—a theatre immersed in a woodland within a rural community—and a long-standing commitment to caring for artistic research processes.
Since its foundation, L’arboreto has prioritized research, experimentation, and the ethics of hospitality, rather than production or programming. Our vocation is to offer artists a protected ecosystem where time, dialogue, and reflection become essential tools for creation. We support practices that investigate the relationship between body, landscape, and community, encouraging encounters with local inhabitants as opportunities for shared knowledge rather than simple outreach.
Through this approach, L’arboreto seeks to nurture long-term artistic processes and innovative residency formats, fostering an environment where research is valued as a cultural practice in its own right.

L’arboreto – Teatro Dimora is a cultural center working in the field of artistic residences since 1998. It is situated in Mondaino, a small peripheral village of 1300 inhabitants on the historical and geographical border between Emilia-Romagna and Marche. The theatre, designed and built in 2004, and its guest house lie in a nine-hectare park which hosts approximately 6.000 different and precious arboreal species. The environment surrounding inspired a peculiar culture of the landscape that suggested us to work on the limits and boundaries of different artistic expressions and inspired our vision of artistic residencies: welcoming and taking care of nomadic projects that dialogue and hybridize with the communities they meet. Therefore, the decision to place hospitality and care of creative processes at the center of our action stemmed from the choice not to betray the vocation of the place, but rather to amplify its heritage, enhance its peculiarities and teachings.
Taking care of artistic residencies since 1998, in 2018 L’arboreto - Teatro Dimora di Mondaino in partnership with La Corte Ospitale di Rubiera has been recognized as the Residency Centre of Emilia-Romagna.
Basic background and logisticsMondaino as you could verify is a small village in the hinterland, in a rural area quite peripheral. It is about 30 km from Rimini, the main centre of the area located on the Adriatic coast. Therefore, public transport services to and from Mondaino are reduced in frequency. Once you arrive at the airport, you can take the train to the nearest stations (Rimini or Cattolica/San Giovanni in M.) or take the airport shuttle that will take you to Rimini. We are available to pick you up at the train station or the shuttle, but we advise you to consider, if you can, to rent a car, because this would allow you to move around independently, especially for daily needs related to food or other urgencies.
Economic support for the research
We can provide you also a research support fee; this possibility is linked to the possibility/availability for your company to be able to issue an invoice for this fee.

Website: www.iteatri.re.itWhat kind of collaboration would you like to establish with the Norwegian partners:
We are particularly interested in artistic and organizational practices that can give us the opportunity to get in touch with different artists and structures for a mutual acquaintance. What are the research areas the Norwegian facility is focusing on? What is its mission?
Fondazione I Teatri di Reggio Emilia was founded in 2002.
His theatrical system is unique in Italy: three theatres - Teatro Municipale Valli, Teatro Ariosto and Teatro Cavallerizza - gathered around a square in the heart of the city, each strongly characterized both architecturally and in terms of the type of programming.
Its activity involves all sectors of live performing arts, with six seasons – Opera, Concerts, Dance, Theater, Musical and one dedicated to Kids and Families – a residency project for young string quartets (“Casa del Quartetto”), an International Competition for Quartets; a festival called Festival Aperto, that usually goes from end of September until middle of November, dedicated to contemporary music and dance in their intertwining with art, literature and technology.
The international vocation of Fondazione I Teatri is evidenced by continuous collaboration in the various sectors of its activity and finds its place of choice in the interdisciplinary Festival Aperto: that is why the Festival seems to us the ideal setting to host young artists-in-residence because it would allow them to meet the numerous guest artists of the festival in a fruitful mutual exchange, creating new opportunities and mutual enrichment.
